“Distinguished Alumni Awards,”  St. Cloud State University

MINNEAPOLIS, MN—November 29, 2001—The law firm of Schwebel, Goetz & Sieben, P.A., is pleased to announce that William R. Sieben was recently honored with St. Cloud State University Alumni Association’s 2001 Distinguished Alumni Award. The award recognizes outstanding lifelong achievement based on criteria such as special honors and awards, professional and community leadership, and support of St. Cloud State University. Mr. Sieben was honored on October 19th, 2001 at the 39th Annual Alumni Award Ceremony.

When asked to describe his friend for the award ceremonies, former Chief Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court Douglas K. Amdahl remarked, “Bill epitomizes what we call ‘good men.’” He is a man of honor, integrity, compassion, legal excellence and strength of character. And if each of the rest of us had the qualities he has and practices, the world would be a better place.”

A native of Hastings, Minnesota, Sieben received his Political Science degree with honors from St. Cloud State University in 1973 and a law degree from William Mitchell College of Law in 1977. Before beginning his career in law, he served on Walter Mondale’s Senate Staff, and was a White House Assistant to the Vice President during the Carter Administration. He returned to Minnesota, and in 1980 joined Schwebel & Associates as a personal injury lawyer. In 1983, the firm became Schwebel, Goetz & Sieben.

Mondale, who has maintained a close friendship with the Sieben family, speaks of Sieben in glowing terms, “[He is] a part of a special family; a great father and husband, he has shaped a brilliant legal career and all the while he has been an involved and concerned citizen.” Steve Wenzel, who presented the award, described Sieben as a lawyer who, “stands apart because of his ethical professionalism and the time he spends with his clients and their families, before, during and after trial. He often meets with them in their homes to provide much needed assurance and guidance.”

Throughout his career, Sieben has received numerous professional honors. For over ten years, he has been named a “Super Lawyer” by peer vote in the magazine Minnesota Law & Politics, and in 2000, he received the most votes out of a possible 23,000 lawyers. In the same year, he was one of just 44 personal injury lawyers in Minnesota named as one of the “Best Lawyers in America” by Woodward & White.

Beyond awards, Sieben has been a leader in his profession and the community. He is certified as a Civil Trial Specialist by the National Board of Trial Advocacy, an exclusive certification based on peer review and a written examination. The Martindale Hubbell Law Directory gives him an “AV” rating, the highest achievable for legal ability and for faithful adherence to ethical standards, professional reliability, and diligence.

At the request of his peers, Sieben has served as president, of the Minnesota Trial Lawyers Association and he is the current chairman of their political action committee. From 1990 to 1995 he was Minnesota’s Governor to the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. In 1998 he was President of the Douglas Amdahl Inn of Court, a legal association dedicated to civility and professionalism. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Regina Hospital Foundation in Hastings, Minnesota.

During his professional career, Sieben has written two publications and a number of professional articles. He has also served as a faculty member at the National College of Advocacy, the National Institute of Trial Advocacy, and the Minnesota Judicial College.
