Description:
A commercial airline pilot, age 55, was a passenger in an airport shuttle taking him from MSP to a downtown Minneapolis hotel when the vehicle hit an unmarked depression left by a construction crew on a downtown street. The pilot was thrown upward by the impact, striking his head on the ceiling. He sustained a cervical spine injury and eventually underwent a cervical fusion. His ability to return to flying was disputed.

The case involved a 34-year-old man who was a concrete worker employed to pour a concrete floor in a 3-story wood frame apartment building under construction in Hutchinson, MN. On 5/5/97, the worker was pouring concrete on the ground floor when an approximately 45 mph gust of wind came up, causing the building to collapse, fatally crushing him. Investigation proved that the collapse was caused by very careless construction practices.

A crane operator moved trusses that had been hoisted to the top of a garage. Upon moving one of the trusses, it bumped another causing it to fall and hit a 42-year-old man with four children on the head, causing bruising of the cervical spine and partial periphrasis of both upper extremities.

A 30-year-old man working as a soil testing engineer on a construction site in Rogers, Minnesota was standing in back of his utility vehicle when he was struck by a wayward bulldozer, sustaining fractures of both legs which required open reduction and placement of surgical hardware. He was ultimately able to return to his employment.
