Due to the increasing popularity of a commuter bus as a main source of transportation, it’s no surprise that the number of bus-related injuries and deaths have also risen dramatically. According to the Center for National Truck and Bus Safety Statistics, the most common fatal bus related accidents are car-bus collisions and pedestrian accidents. More than 60% of bus accident fatalities involve another vehicle and 25% involve a pedestrian.

Commercial Bus Accidents
The Federal Department of Transportation’s Motor Carrier Safety Administration develops and polices rules and regulations to ensure safety of bus passengers. Some of the rules include the hours a bus driver must log before carrying passengers (including acquiring a special license), bus safety features and preventive maintenance of the bus. The Federal government defines a bus as a passenger-carrying vehicle designed to seat at least 16 including the driver.
School Bus Accidents
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a school bus is the safest motor vehicle on our highways. This fact is hard to swallow when more than 10,000 children are injured in school bus accidents each year. Some are injured while riding the bus, but in many cases, they were hit by the bus.
According to the National Safety Council, over the past few years, about 70% of the deaths in fatal school bus related crashes were occupants of vehicles other than the school bus and 20% were pedestrians. Of the pedestrians killed in school bus related crashes over this period, approximately 77% were struck by the school bus.
It is also alarming that despite all the advanced safety features available on new car today, the basic design of Large Yellow School Bus has not been changed since 1977. The hottest issue surrounding school bus safety is their lack of seatbelts with the bench seats.
